  • Sail for Gold ISAF World Cup Event WPNSA, 1-8 June

As this was to be the Olympic and Paralympic sailing venue in a few months time, a big fleet of 36 boats had entered. The wind was light for the first race and I expected a left-hand wind bend up the first beat and verified this pre start. Unfortunately I (and Helena) got pushed out to the right to the right by other boats and so we were on the wrong side. Lesson, ensure better boat positioning at the start so I can go the direction I want to. We both had to work our way up from the back of the fleet, I got to 23rd and Helena 17th. It was similar 8 knot windspeed in the next race but I got my positing better and rounded the first mark 11th. I had good speed and pulled though to 8th by the finish overtaking the world number one, Damien Seguin, nice! It was strong winds for the rest of the week and we only got two more days sailing in. My results were 20, 22, 14 and 21 giving me 18th overall. Just in the top half. I struggled a bit in the stronger winds through a combination of lack of fitness, having to hold myself upright in the boat and boat setup (in particular too much weather helm). I had loads of backstay on but Rob Wilson (Helena and Megan’s coach) told me to use much more Cunningham, something to try in the future!

At the age of twelve, I was diagnosed with Freidriechs Ataxia, a degenerative genetic disorder which affects my nerves and muscle co-ordination. I have chosen not to research my condition as I would rather live for today and focus on the life I lead rather than dwell on what might be.

My passion is sailing and my aim is to win the World Championships and when sailing regains its Paralympic status, a Gold Medal.

A Paralympic sailing campaign is expensive and can only be sucessful with help and support from others. I am extremely grateful to those who are helping me so please check out 'Sponsors & Links'. If you think you can offer help or support to my campaign then please contact me or kindly make a donation through the link below.

Please follow my progress through regular updates on this page and more frequent posts on Facebook and Twitter (links below).

I would like to sincerely thank my sponsors without whose help I would not have the possibility to achieve the level of success that I aspire to.
